The work at The Village of Hope never ends!

Imagine walking into a classroom filled with children eager to express themselves, but behind their smiles lies an unseen world of fear, pain, and isolation. For many of these children, bullying is not just something they face at school, it’s a part of their daily lives, even at home.

Dysfunctional relationships, lack of communication within families, and peer pressure create an environment where the path from bullying to becoming victims of human trafficking, drug dealers, or criminal networks is heartbreakingly short.

At The Village of Hope Romania, we are not only rescuing and supporting children in need, but we are also fighting to prevent these tragedies from happening in the first place. One of the most impactful ways we do this is through our school prevention programs, where we talk to children about the dangers of human trafficking and bullying. These sessions often reveal shocking truths – and stories of children facing torment not just from their peers, but from those closest to them.

During one of our interactive activities, we give children blank masks and ask them to draw a character they’d like to embody. The results are striking! Most choose frightening characters – ones that inspire fear and would keep others away. Why? Because fear is often the dominant emotion in their lives. It’s heartbreaking but also a window into their world and a starting point for healing and education.

Romania currently ranks 3rd out of 42 European countries for the number of children who are victims of bullying. The psychological toll is devastating. Depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, and even suicidal ideation. These consequences also affect their academic performance, motivation to attend school, and their overall self-worth. 

This is why our prevention work is so critical. By visiting schools, we teach children to recognize the dangers of bullying and human trafficking, empowering them with the knowledge and tools to change their attitudes and behaviors. Our goal is to break the cycle of fear and create safer environments where children can grow, learn, and thrive.
