Maria’s Story

 Maria’s story is one of tragedy, perseverance, and ultimately, hope—a hope that became reality because of the kindness of people like you.

In 2015, Maria’s father walked away, leaving her and her mother and brother alone. Desperate and vulnerable, Maria’s mother sought help in a new relationship and moved her children into a house that soon became a place of unimaginable terror. The household became a daily scene of heavy drinking and abuse. One night, things escalated, leading to a deadly fight that Maria witnessed—a tragic event that left a resident of the village dead.

Soon after, Maria’s stepfather turned his attention to her in darker, more dangerous ways. Overwhelmed by the abuse and isolation, Maria began harming herself, unable to see any other escape. Her brother managed to flee, but Maria’s stepfather had other plans for her. He tried to trade her to another man in exchange for a tractor, trailer, and two sheep.

Physically and emotionally shattered, Maria finally found her way to The Village of Hope Romania. With the help of Mariana and our team of social workers, Maria slowly began to heal and rebuild her life. She finished school training to become a nail technician—a step toward independence she never thought possible.

Over the past 10 years, Maria has not only healed but has found purpose. She now works with other children at our daycare center. Maria’s past has shaped her into one of the most compassionate caregivers we have. “I don’t even want to think where I would be today if The Village of Hope Romania didn’t exist.”
