In loving memory of Mariana Petersel
Mariana Petersel

September 1, 2026

For more than five decades, Mariana Petersel devoted her life to serving the forgotten children of Romania. She was a tireless advocate for vulnerable children, struggling families, and those who had nowhere else to turn. Her life’s work was never about recognition or personal achievement, it was about protecting the vulnerable, and reminding every person she met that they were deeply loved and valued.

For nearly thirty years, Mariana faithfully served at The Village of Hope Romania, first through her own organization, Generație Tânără România (Young Generation Romania), and later as Executive Director of The Village of Hope Romania. Together, this partnership became a lifeline for thousands of children and families across Romania.

Mariana possessed a rare combination of compassion, tenacity, and courage.

She walked into remote villages that many people overlooked. She entered homes marked by poverty, abuse, neglect, and hopelessness. She met frightened mothers, hungry children, and young people at risk of exploitation—not with judgment, but with kindness, unconditional love, and practical help.

She understood that rescuing a child meant much more than providing food or clothing. It meant restoring dignity. It meant creating opportunities through education, counseling, summer camps, and family support. She believed every child deserved to know they had value and that their future did not have to be determined by their circumstances.

Under Mariana’s leadership, The Village of Hope Romania expanded far beyond its original children’s home. She helped build programs that reached vulnerable families throughout western Romania, providing food, medical care, clothing, school supplies, crisis intervention, trafficking prevention, and summer camps that gave children joyful memories, confidence, and hope. Mariana did not look for the easiest path—she looked for the child who needed help the most.

She was often the first to answer the phone when there was a crisis. She traveled countless miles across Romania to reach families in desperate situations. She listened patiently, prayed faithfully, and never stopped believing that lives could be transformed.

To the children she served, she was more than a director. Mariana was a mother, a grandmother, a protector, a mentor, a teacher, and a safe place.

To her colleagues, she was a trusted leader whose wisdom shaped an entire generation of ministry. She led quietly, faithfully, and with remarkable humility. She celebrated every success, carried every burden, and gave herself wholeheartedly to the work God had placed before her.

Mariana’s legacy cannot be measured simply by the programs she helped build or the years she served. Her legacy lives on in every child who found safety instead of fear. Every young person who found hope instead of despair. Every family that remained together because someone cared enough to help. Every life forever changed because Mariana chose to say “YES” to God’s calling.

While we grieve her passing, we also celebrate a life extraordinarily well lived. Thank you, Mariana. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your compassion. Thank you for showing us what it truly means to love our neighbors.

You fought a good fight – you finished your course – you kept the faith – and your legacy will continue for generations to come.
